This paper explores the stages that structured Andreas, Jonathan Châtel’s rewriting of The Road to Damascus by August Strindberg. Based on the questioning of the uncertain identity of the character of the Stranger, the task of rewriting revolves around key themes: the dream of changing lives, the desire to disappear, the dizziness of madness. Andreas, a labyrinthine dream play in dialogue with the Strindberg path, has also been a meditation on the act of writing and the role of the maternal figure in creation.
...

...

In spring 2008, Santiago del Hoyo and Manuel Bonillo settled in Granada after having worked for three years with the company @lma @lter in Bulgaria. They brought together an unstructured and heterogeneous group of people with different backgrounds, contexts and profiles, and created a theatrical rarity that they introduced at the Universidad de Granada that same year. It was entitled Rapsodia n.º 2: “La vida es sueño” and was born of the intersection of a Brahms rhapsody, a pseudo-random selection of the text of Calderon's play, and an overactive philosophical obsession. The theatrical experiment was a success, and they received a small grant that they fully invested in renting premises of 40 m² in a deprived neighbourhood in Granada. In September 2009 they boldly opened the venue to the public, where they offer comprehensive courses in "stage creation" and free shows three times a week. Since then they have produced more than twenty shows, toured some of the most important international experimental theatre circuits, and continue with their stage rarities, which critics and audiences alike regard as unclassifiable. Coinciding with the beginning of spring 2019, the 2nd Research Conference on Independent Theatre was held at the Institut del Teatre. The specification ("independent") of the call first caused bewilderment, and then controversy. The Vladimir Tzekov case, which feels challenged by both, is presented here as a bid to discover, denounce, contradict and subvert its own conditions of possibility, which are the conditions of possibility of its (in)dependencies.
...

...

The following reflection aims to explore the concept of gameformance and some of its definitions based on the analysis by the researcher and designer Sebastien Deterding (game studies) on the scope of gamification in contemporary theatre creation. Beyond undertaking an exercise in taxonomy, it is interesting to look at some elements taken from the construction of game theory that have been applied in different ways to the creation of co-creation theatre devices by several creators and artistic collectives. The identification of certain concepts, applicable in practical terms, can eventually enable the task of those creators who embark on the construction of a theatre that seeks to be “playable”.
...

...

In this paper I elaborate on how matter is thought of in the work of Henri Bergson and Karen Barad, thus challenging the Cartesian split between body and mind.

On the one hand, I disclose Bergson’s envisagement of matter not as a thing but as a process, and stress how matter plays a central role in the experience of duration, therefore shaping reality as a process of becoming-with. Although Bergson’s diagrams are usually figured as static, I argue that they are actually imbued with movement and should be seen as moving. This bond of matter to duration and transformation blurs common distinctions between matter and language and proves especially useful when thinking of dance and performance as arts of mattering.

On the other hand, I follow Barad’s description of quantum mechanics in order to highlight that matter cannot be torn apart from meaning, since knowledge cannot be produced out of matter but is always constructed from within matter. Barad’s insistence on the production of knowledge as an embodied practice reveals a strong political commitment to the world as an ongoing open process of mattering that asks us to rethink the meaning of agency from a posthumanist point of view.

I argue that, for both Bergson and Barad, matter can be said to perform. I eventually raise the question of how such an approach can help us think about and practise dance and performance beyond the Cartesian framework of the primacy of language.
...
